PaN ontologies online

The PaNKOS service provides ontologies and information services for the Photon and Neutron Sources. PaNKOS actually stands for Photon and Neutron Knowledge Organisation System. It describes various neutron and synchrotron facilities from all over Europe, with information regarding their instruments and techniques used. For more information, documemtation and background information visit the PaNKOS site on purl.org.

PaNdata ODI Open Workshop in Amsterdam 25th of September

Please don't forget to register until Sept. 8th!

PaNdata ODI 2nd Open Workshop

The 2nd PaNdata ODI Open Workshop took place in Amsterdam on the 25th of September, co-located with the 4th plenary of the Research Data Alliance (RDA). The workshop was a one-day event, complemented by three RDA sessions and concentrating on three major themes:

  • Standard data formats
  • Evolution of scientific instruments and storage infrastructures
  • Evolution of storage concepts

The workshop in brief

7th FIM4R: Federated Identity Management for Research Collaborations meeting

The 7th FIM4R meeting took place in Frascati/Italy 23rd to 24th. Jean-Francois Perrin/ILL presented the Umbrella developments for the PaNdata collaboration (slides). From the summary:

The 5th Harmonization meeting

Large research facilities are quite popular among researchers of the photon and neutron community. More than 30’000 scientists alone in Europe visit each year these facilities and perform their exper-iments with high scientific quality as documented by several recent Nobel price awards. The role of the research facilities in this context is to offer the scientists the best possible experimental and – increasingly important – IT environment. As this type of research is highly competitive, user identi-fication plays an important role, e.g.

RDA PaNSIG

PaNdata has initiated establishing an Interest Group under the hood of the Research Data Alliance (RDA), the Photon and Neutron Science Interest Group or PaNSIG in short. Colleagues in Australia and the US have been contacted to join PaNSIG making the interest group a truly global platform for data issues and technical discussions. Responses have been very positive and activities have been outlined in a telephone conference with participants from DESY, STFC, ISIS, ORNL, ANL, LBL, SLAC in October 2013.

ECM28

End of August 2013 the European Crystallography meeting (ECM28) took place in Warwick/UK. The crystallography community is certainly one of the most prominent scientific communities using our neutron and photon sources.

GridKa School 2013

PaNdata project has been presented at the GridKa School 2013 on Big Data, Clouds and Grids. The presentation discusses the the main issues concerning best practice for handling large scientific data sets, as well as trying to look ahead to see how funding agencies are increasingly attempting to influence how scientists handle their data, by themselves defining such best practice. Slides can be found on the conference web.

Umbrella and edugain bridging

At the last PaNdata hosted FIM4R meeting at PSI in Villigen (Switzerland) the GEANT GN3plus task "Enabling Users" was presented. The project consists of a small team of federated identity experts. The goals of this task include to assist research projects to enable their services for eduGAIN in order toaccelerate the adoption and usage of eduGAIN. This is also a goal shared by REFEDS.

3rd PaN-Data and CRISP Harmonisation Meeting

13.06.2012 This was the third event in the series of the so called harmonization meetings. The meeting took place at Zurich airport with 21 participants representing 12 different institutes or research infrastructures. More details and all slides of the harmonization meeting are available from the meeting page or the table of PaNdata ODI workshops
